The Master Programme in the Humanities, specialising in Cultural Heritage and Sustainability, provides you with the analytical skills needed to manage cultural heritage in our increasingly complex, globalised and diversified world. The programme has a unique interdisciplinary profile where different perspectives on sustainability and cultural heritage are integrated. It will provide you with the competence needed to pursue an international career in the strategic management of cultural heritage.
The programme is offered at Uppsala University Campus Gotland, located in the World Heritage site of Visby in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
Why this programme?
Are you interested in cultural heritage and sustainable development? Then this is the Master’s programme for you! The aim of the programme is to provide an advanced understanding of how cultural heritage and sustainable development are linked: how can we preserve, use and develop cultural heritage in a sustainable way, and how can cultural heritage be used as driver for regional development?
The courses build upon research in conservation conducted by faculty involved in the programme. They will give you a broad introduction to the field of cultural heritage and sustainability, as well as specialisation in the following areas:
cultural heritage and regional development
cultural heritage in identity politics
climate change and energy efficiency, and
cultural heritage in peace and conflicts.
During the first year you will participate in a longer excursion in which you will get an understanding of how these themes are debated among scholars and practitioners. During year two you have the opportunity to shape the focus of the programme to suit your own interests and personal goals, either by choosing courses on your own or by doing an internship.
The student group will be diverse with a mix of Swedish and international students with different educational backgrounds from the humanities, the natural sciences and the social sciences.
The programme leads to a Master of Arts (120 credits) with Conservation as the main field of study. It is also possible to graduate after one academic year with a Master of Arts (60 credits) with Conservation as the main field of study.
The programme starts with two mandatory courses in Conservation during the first semester. The first course gives an advanced introduction to the relationship between cultural heritage and sustainable development. The second course focuses on Conservation as an academic discipline, introducing different theories and methodologies and developing the students' writing skills.
During the second semester, students take four courses offering different perspectives on cultural heritage and sustainability. The topics of these courses all belong to the research profile of the department.
During the third semester, students begin working on their Master’s theses. To help students develop their thesis topics, a seminar series is given. In the second half of the semester, there will be several advanced courses to choose from. Students can then focus on one of the course topics from the first year. It is also possible for students to study at another university or do an internship during this semester, should they wish to.
The programme ends with the Master’s thesis which is finished during semester four. If a student has already written the one-year Master's thesis of 15 credits, he or she may write a smaller thesis in order to complete the Master's degree.

Semester 2 - Cultural Heritage as a Driver for Regional Development (7.5 credits) - Climate for Culture (7.5 credits) - Cultural Heritage in Peace and Conflict (7.5 credits) - Heritage Politics and Identity (7.5 credits)
Semester 4 - Master's Thesis in Conservation (in total 45 credits)
The academic environment at Campus Gotland is characterised by a close working relationship between students and faculty. The active involvement of students and their on-site presence in Visby are fundamental to the programme. We consider the diverse experiences of the international student group a valuable resource in teaching. Gotland with its rich cultural heritage provides an inspiring environment, both as a backdrop for discussions and as an arena for applications, excursions, projects, etc. All teaching is conducted in English, mainly in the form of seminars, lectures and group exercises.
During the first year there are a number of excursions, one of which goes abroad. Throughout the programme there is a focus on academic writing. During the autumn semester the courses are offered at a full-time pace, while spring semester courses are given at a half-time pace. Examination forms vary, but usually consist of active participation in seminars and submission of written assignments in groups or individually.
The Master Programme in the Humanities, specialising in Cultural Heritage and Sustainability, is an international and interdisciplinary programme that will provide you with the necessary skills and competences to work with strategic issues related to how cultural heritage can be preserved, used, and developed. Your ability to understand complex societal phenomena, in which the balance between development and preservation is key, will prepare you for a career in strategic management of cultural heritage in both private companies and public organisations. The programme, with its focus on academic discourse and writing skills, will also give you a solid foundation for pursuing an academic career within conservation.
Requirements: Academic requirements A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities, social sciences or natural sciences. Also required is 60 credits in conservation or a similar field of study.
Language requirements All applicants need to verify English language proficiency that corresponds to English studies at upper secondary (high school) level in Sweden ("English 6"). This can be done in a number of ways, including through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, or through previous upper secondary (high school) or university studies. The minimum test scores are:
IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90
a total appraisal of quantity and quality of previous university studies, and
a statement of purpose outlining their proficiency in conservation(1-2 pages).
