Master programme in the Humanities, pathway Musicology
This programme gives you a broad basis for pursuing a research career in musicology or for other professional opportunities in the field of music, combining up-to-date theoretical perspectives with solid methodological skills. It provides you with analytical tools for understanding the function of music and musical cultures in present and past societies. You can choose to specialise in different sub-disciplines, such as historical musicology, ethnomusicology or popular music studies. With a focus on theoretical and methodological developments in the humanities, as well as on more practical skills and competences pertinent to professional careers, you will graduate with a Master of Arts, specialising in the discipline of musicology.
A bachelor degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 ECTS credits (i.e. three years of full time studies), in humanities or social sciences with at least 60 ECTS credits in musicology, ethnomusicology, or an equivalent foreign degree. Proof of skills in English to a level corresponding to English B in the Swedish upper secondary school. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test with the following minimum scores:
- IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
- TOEFL: Paper-based test: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in essay section and a total score of 575. Internet-based test: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in essay section and a total score of 90.
- Cambridge: CAE, CPE
Applying for the Master programme in the Humanities is a two-step process. First, you need to submit your application for the programme via the Swedish higher education application agency (type Master programme in the Humanities in the search box). After that, you have to submit a proof of eligibility for the specific pathway (i.e. Musicology). These documents should be sent to the department (see below). Selection will be based on a total appraisal of quantity and quality of previous university studies. Special emphasis is placed on the quality of the degree project in musicology or equivalent. As full documentation of your degree project, preferably a Bachelor's thesis, a paper copy is required. A statement of intent outlining your musicological proficiency (2 pages maximum) is also requested. The documentation must arrive in the hands of the programme coordinator by the start of February (for exact date, see the master programme page linked above).

Grants for masters students
Each semester, the Department of Musicology announces an application round for smaller grants (ca. 5.000 to 10.000 SEK) open to students enrolled in the Master in Humanities programme with musicology as their main topic. The grants are intended to meet costs in relation to fieldwork, travels to archives, repro costs, participation in conferences or similar activities related to the academic work of the student.
Submitted applications are considered continuously, but deadline for applying for grants to be used during the autumn semester of 2019 is October 15.
